Chinese scientists developed new method of mass production of reconstituted dermal papillae that can be used as basis for hair cloning

Posted on: November 7, 2008

Team of Chinese scientists developed new method of reconstructing dermal papilla from cultured human scalp dermal papilla cells. Scientist used alginate–polylysine–alginate polymer to produce semi-permeable micro-capsules containing dermal papilla cells.

As part of the method, dermal papilla cells were first propagated in culture to increase their number. Secondly, these cells were automatically microencapsulated into polymer matrix using a specially designed high-voltage electric field droplet generator.

Scientists further claim that such dermal papilla micro-capsules were able to induce formation of new hair follicles upon implantation of such micro-capsules into hairless footpad skin of host rats. However, evidence provided by authors that it is indeed human micro-encapsulated dermal papilla cells that induce new follicles is insufficient. Therefore, author's claims should be interpreted with skepticism.

This study is published in 2008 edition of journal Archives of Dermatological Research
