It is known, that, at least, majority of skin stem cells reside in bulge area. Before it was shown that many cells in bulge preferentially express keratin 15 (both in mouse and in human). Now, K15/eGFP mouse was generated. In this mouse all cells that express keratin 15 also were green fluorescent. Using appropriate tools it was possible to isolate very bright green cells from the skin. These cells represented only 7.5% of total number of epithelial cells. Further testing confirmed, that these isolated cells had properties of stem cells. This provides scientists with valuable technique of isolation of pure skin stem cells population for further investigations, including hair cloning |
